G.B. Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater is his final work, his masterpiece, completed shortly before his death at the age of just 26.

Described by Vincenzo Bellini as “The Poem of Sorrow,” the Stabat Mater is a sacred composition based on the text of a 13th-century prayer by Jacopone da Todi, addressed to the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ.

Through his music, Pergolesi seeks to portray the strength of a mother and the profound sorrow she experiences in the face of her son’s death.
